Experience the natural wonders of Banff on two wheels!

During May and June, Highway 1A closes to vehicle traffic to respect the wildlife in their denning areas, offering a unique opportunity for cyclists to explore this stunning route.

Join us for an all age bike ride along a smooth, traffic-free paved road. As we go, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife sightings, people often see deer and majestic Big Horn sheep, and even a glimpse of a bear.

When: June 13th, 11:00 am  -  4:00 pm.

  • We aim to begin the ride at 11:00 am.
  • Banff is approximately 90 minutes away, depending on your departure location within the city.
  • Allow time for lineups if you need to purchase a day pass at the gates in case you don't have a National Park Pass.
  • Please also allocate time for unloading your bike(s), packing your gear, and reaching the meeting point.

Where: We'll kick off our journey at the Banff Train Station.

To reach this take the second Banff exit and head towards the town. The train station is on your left after you cross the train tracks. There is a large free parking lot to the east of the station. We will gather by the main doors to the station.

What to Expect:

  • This scenic bike ride spans approximately 25 km each way, totaling a 50 km round trip. Be sure your body is up to that kind of effort. There are hills and valleys, with breathtaking scenery along the way.
  • Restrooms are conveniently located at both ends of the trail, with additional facilities at the Muleshoe Viewpoint.
  • We will stop for lunch at the Muleshoe Viewpoint as there are picnic tables.
  • This is not a competitive ride so if you can’t make the whole length you can turn around at any point.
  • Here's the link to the trail.

What to Bring:

  • Your trusty bike, well-prepared and ready for the ride. Ensure it's in optimal condition with properly inflated tires and smoothly functioning brakes, chain, and gears.
  • Don't have a bike? No problem! Rental options, including acoustic and e-bikes, are available at the station - https://bikebanff.com/bike-rentals/. Just make sure to book in advance and get there early to get all the paperwork and fitting completed in time for the ride. There are also a lot of bike rental shops around Calgary and Banff you can choose from.
  • Safety first: don't forget your helmet!
  • Pack a backpack or panniers to carry essentials such as lunch, water, extra layers, and your camera.
  • A lunch - we'll be eating along the trail.
  • Water bottles. It is a fairly long ride. Depending on the weather you may need several liters of water. There are no water sources along the way for refills.
  • Appropriate shoes and clothing. You may want to bring extra clothing on the ride so you can add layers if the weather changes. Banff is in a different weather zone from Calgary, so the weather can be completely different. In the 150 years they have been keeping weather records for Banff, it has snowed on every day of the year.
  • Sunscreen.

Carpooling:

  • If you want to car pool, please let Paul Wiebe or Kari Barter know so we can figure out where to meet up. Please bring along some cash to help with the cost of gas ($15 or so, plus more for a park pass if needed)
  • If you are available to take others, please let Paul Wiebe or Kari Barter know so we can figure out who to match with whom.
